Scholarships
"The objects for which the foundation is established are solely for the advancement of education and that part of the income be expended for the purposes which result to the benefit of citizens of Kenya..."

JKF was able to expend its profits for the purposes of the advancement of education by awarding scholarships to bright but needy students in public secondary schools. This is the beginning of scholarships fees.

By 1995, the number of students on scholarships had risen to unmanageable levels and coupled with arbituary increases in school fees, the scholarships programme was suspeneded for five years.

During the suspension period, JKF continued to clear the arrears, which were in excess of Kshs. 22 million owed to various schools. The programme has since been re-launched with particular emphasis on its sustainability.

It is envisaged that by 2006, a large number of orphans mainly as a result of the HIV-AIDS pandemic will require assistance by way of schools fees.

Currently the number of students being admitted to national secondary schools is just under 2000. It is the desire of JKF to be able to sponser just the same number of students admitted to all public secondary schools in all districts in Kenya.

The number of scholarships offered varies from year to year subject to the financial ability of the Foundation. However, the foundation hopes to increase the number of sponsored students to 1,050 by the year 2006. With avarage fees of KShs. 36,000 per year per student, the Foundation expects to pay over KSHs.41m per year by 2006.

The number sponsored students will average 5 students per district, the actual allocation being used in the district in the enrollment as a percentage of national enrolment in secondary schools multiplied by the number of scholarships available.

The ASAL regions are currently allocated 5% more scholarships while the Board of Directors operates another 5% to be awarded to students in special circumstances.

JKF has played a crucial role in educating bright Kenyans, any of whom have completed university education and are involved in nation building in various capacities.
