| The 2010 Jomo Kenyatta Foundation Scholarship cheque award ceremony was held at the Foundation's Head Office on March 17 th 2010. Kshs. 9.5 million was disbursed to 370 Form One students drawn from across the country.
This was in partial fulfillment of JKF's threefold mandate of advancing education, alleviating poverty and relief of distress of the public. The beneficiaries comprise bright but needy students.
Speakers at the ceremony urged the beneficiaries to reciprocate the favour by registering good results in their academics. The Chief Guest, who is also the JKF Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Jacob Mwirigi, led in this call.
 “We received over 3,000 applications from qualified and eligible students, but because of financial constraints, we could only pick 370 of them. Ideally I see no reason why you shouldn't score ‘As' in KCSE. Do not at any time be intimidated by colleagues at school for studying under a scholarship scheme. You are equal to anybody else, and you have the potential to surpass them.”
On her part, the Managing Director, Mrs. Nancy Karimi, reiterated the Chairman's call, adding that JKF closely monitors the beneficiaries' overall performance with a view to continued sponsorship or otherwise. She urged them to be disciplined, focused and cement their position in the scheme for the four years through academic excellence.
The Chairman of the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation Scholarships Alumni Association, Mr. Caleb Kiprono Metto, said the association was in the process of reviewing last year's KCSE results with a view to establishing how the JKF scholarship beneficiaries faired. Provisionally, he said, there were indications that most of them did exceptionally well.
One such beneficiary was Elizabeth Mumbi Njeri, formerly of Moi Girls' High School, Eldoret. She scored an impressive grade ‘A'average. She recounted how she worked hard to attain the grade, adding that it was not beyond anybody else so long as they remained dedicated and focused. She thanked the Foundation for seeing her through her secondary education; a feat she said would not have been possible given the humble background she comes from.
The event was also graced by beneficiaries of yesteryears, and who are currently serving the nation in various capacities. Not to be left behind were the 2010 beneficiaries, who thanked JKF for making their academic dreams to come true. They promised to keep the fire burning by consistently doing well at school.
