The Jomo Kenyatta Foundation holds an annual Scholarships Cheque Award Ceremony for successful Form One beneficiaries. The 2011 event was held on Wednesday, 2nd of March, at the JKF grounds. Kshs. 28 million was disbursed to 280 form one students drawn from across the country.

The chief guest of honour was the Minister for Education, Honourable Prof. Sam Ongeri. Also in attendance was the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Prof. James ole Kiyiapi, members of the JKF Board of Directors, members of the JKF Scholarship Beneficiaries Association (JKFSBA), JKF staff, principals of various secondary schools and some of the beneficiaries.

The Minister, in his speech, underscored the importance of education in today’s world, saying it was the only inalienable treasure that society could give its subjects. He urged the youth to take their academics seriously as a way of showing gratitude for the efforts and resources that went into making their education a reality.

Other speakers included the JKF Board of Directors’ Chair, Mr. Jacob Mwirigi, Managing Director, Mrs. Nancy Karimi, JKFSBA Chairperson, Mr. Caleb Kiprono, two school heads and students’ representatives. They were all unanimous that the Foundation was doing a commendable job of helping the bright and needy students realize their potential.

Joy Vivian Kendi, a former Kenya High School student and beneficiary of the JKF Scholarship Programme, took the chance to thank all those who made her dreams to pursue secondary education come true. She scored an impressive grade A in 2010’s KCSE. She said her secret was sheer hard work coupled with understanding teachers.

The Jomo Kenyatta Foundation and Mary Hill Girls’ choirs provided splendid entertainment via their neatly choreographed music. The MC and media maestro, Fred Obachi Machoka, kept the tempo of the event alive from start to finish.

It was without doubt one of the finest ceremonies of its kind to be held. We hope to make the next one bigger and better.
